Former Humber president honoured
January 29, 2009

by Thomas Hurst

Former President of Humber ITAL, Dr. Robert Gordon was awarded the Ministers Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to Ontario’s college system and the Order of Ontario for excellence and achievements in his field. The ceremony was held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 in the Humber Room. Dr. Gordon began his journey in the education field over 40 years ago, teaching elementary school students and coaching. After accelerating as far as he could in Quebec’s post secondary system, he took on a new task by becoming Humber’s President where, he would serve for 25 years. “Humber was great because we had unlimited scope. It didn’t feel like we repeated things 25 times,” Dr. Gordon said. Dr. Gordon credits both his and Humber’s success to the environment they were able to create. “I do believe Humber developed a great reputation and that is worth something. It’s the sum of the parts that make the whole,” Dr. Gordon said.

The Humber Students’ Federation continued its Winter Wonderland Week at Humber ITAL, on Tuesday Jan. 20 with its second day of events: Winter Sleepover Day. Students packed the Student Centre at North campus, and H Building at Lakeshore campus to watch and participate in the first-ever HSF pillow fight, with the winner taking home a trip for two to Panama City for Spring Break. Eight participants found themselves in a bracket format elimination tournament. Four separate one on one matches took place, the winner from each advancing to the next round with the winners being determined by judges. At Lakeshore campus, Ben Holesh came out on top after an intense bout against runner up Ashley Leach. On the North campus side of things, it was David “The Destroyer” Hopson winning the grand prize, with the runner up receiving a pair of Toronto Maple Leafs tickets vs. Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday Jan 31.

Guard yourself from mumps
January 29, 2009

by Meagan Thibeault

Imagine being stuck in your room for nine days and deprived of any sort of physical contact with anyone. That is the isolation period for anyone diagnosed with the Mumps Virus, even if they don’t experience any side effects. It’s also exactly why students should take advantage of Campus Intercept’s Mumps Catch-Up program by getting their booster shot. “A lot of folks may be labouring under the impression that they’re covered by the single shot,” Mark Nesbitt from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care said.

Clothing shet to melt ice
January 29, 2009

by Carmen Brosseau

Clothes were taken off during the body heat competition on Thursday, Jan. 22 in the Humber Students’ Federation student centre at North campus. Six groups of two competed against each other for 30 minutes, trying to see which team could melt a block of ice the quickest, using only their body heat. A large crowd of viewers gathered while cheering for their favourite pair. The event started in a civil manner around noon, each team quickly rubbing the ice with their hands and using the tables provided by HSF. But after 15 minutes it looked like anything but an ice melting competition. Clothing was shed and teams quickly thought of interesting positions to help melt the ice faster.
