January-start students were welcomed to Humber ITAL last week with a full orientation including campus tours, faculty presentations, group ice breakers and a play put on by Lakeshore’s comedy students.
The Humber Students’ Federation (HSF) partnered with the college and provided a free pizza lunch and swag giveaways to new students at both the North and Lakeshore campuses.
HSF was on hand to educate new students about the services they offer including events, clubs, a health and dental plan, legal and financial counselling, on-campus jobs, bursaries and a food bank program.
“[Orientation] is a key opportunity for us to educate students on all the services and resources we have to offer,” HSF Programming Co-ordinator Lindsay Maedel said. “By informing students right away, they will be able to optimize their school experience and find fun ways to get involved on campus.”
Throughout orientation week, HSF staff handed out frosh kits which included goodies like scarves, recycled notebooks, lanyards, and Axe products all contained in a handy shoulder bag. Students were challenged to find the most creative way to wear their scarf in order to win HSF sweatshirts.
Pizza, salad, and soft drinks were served throughout the week and new students were encouraged to mingle with their classmates during the lunch break.
Each semester, orientation is a major campus event, drawing help from Student Life, Facilities, HSF, and all of Humber’s schools of study. Under the supervision of full-time Humber staff, 70 Student Ambassadors co-ordinate tour groups and guide students through their day’s activities.
