The Humber Students’ Federation is taking its initiative to aid in creating a more environmentally-friendly place to live to a campus-wide level with Humber Earth Week from Monday, Apr. 6 to Thursday, Apr. 9.
“In working so closely with the Humber Environmental Action and Awareness club on campus, I’ve found that they’re really struggling to get participation outside of their club,” HSF President, Mike Berg said. “We felt something as pressing as the environment and sustainability, especially on a large campus like Humber, is really important.”
The week will kick off with the opening ceremonies in the HSF Amphitheatre at 6:00 p.m. They will feature the Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, the Honourable George Smitherman, followed by an appearance from Bill Nye the Science Guy.
On Tuesday, there will be an Environmental Sustainability Discussion Panel and a bicycled powered concert at CAPS pub. The event begins at 12 p.m. with the panel at the HSF Student Center, followed by a performance from Mr. Something Something from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at CAPS. The concert will be powered by the students, who will be creating the energy needed to operate the equipment by riding bicycles.
“It’s audience participation at its finest,” Berg said.
The HSF Student Centre will feature used goods in the form of fashion on Wednesday, Apr. 8. Starting at 12:00 p.m. students will participant in the Trashy Fashion Show. All their garments will be from 100 per cent recovered or recycled material.
The week will close on Thursday, Apr. 9 with a campus clean-up starting at Residence at 10:00 a.m. Student volunteers will be picking up garbage through the Arboretum, the campus and the outside community.
