Leave the pack behind, one day at a time
January 29, 2009

by Mark Millard

We all hear it on a consistent basis: “I’m going to quit [smoking] after this pack,” or “It’s my new years resolution, I swear.” Regardless, the difficulty of quitting the unhealthy habit known as cigarette smoking is consistently underestimated and on several occasions, a failure. The Leave the Pack Behind project is here to help. On Wednesday Jan 21 as part of National Non-Smoking Week, smokers were invited to take part in ‘Weedless Wednesday’ at Humber’s North campus, encouraging everyone to avoid smoking for a day. The project is aimed at providing assistance to young adults who attend post-secondary schools and who are hoping to quit smoking. LTPB also aims to prevent others from second-hand smoke, and expose the things that keep people hooked on cigarettes. “Weedless Wednesday specifically is the first step for smokers that need support to stop smoking,” Poonam Sharma, the team leader of LTPB said. “Its one day of non smoking and we provide guidance and support. It’s the first step to perhaps a longer period of not smoking.”

This young Canadian band have been climbing the charts and growing in popularity` with the release of their 2008 album, Holes. The piano and guitar inspired rock music sets this band apart from many others who share the same spotlight. They first became a group in 2002 when they performed together at The Mountain View Hotel.

Hawks look to continue their winning ways in 2009 by Mark Millard
January 14, 2009

The Humber Hawks are coming off a very exciting, successful, and victory-filled fall semester; and it is only the beginning. The Hawks had a golden fall 08 semester with Ontario Colleges Athletic Association gold in both men’s and women’s golf, men’s rugby, and women’s soccer to name a few. So what does this mean you might ask? It means that the expectations are even higher this semester. Athletics Director, Doug Fox, is very optimistic about what the Hawks teams can accomplish.

The Green Report: Stop paying for something that is free by Meagan Thibeault
January 14, 2009

It comprises about 70 per cent of our bodies and covers roughly 70 to 75 per cent of the earth’s surface. It’s an absurdly simple bonding of two hydrogen atoms with one oxygen atom that results in a molecule that is essential to all life on earth. And aren’t we lucky that it’s available for free. Water is a necessity to our survival, and most people are insistent on it’s free, public accessibility. Nevertheless, in 2005 the world’s consumers spent $100 billion on bottled water. What people don’t realize is that the bottled water industry creates problems that parallel Garrent Harden’s popular “Tragedy of the Commons” dilemma, where shared resources are destroyed and diminished by a few individuals acting out of self-interest.

Please, no more sequels by Corey Johnson
January 14, 2009

While looking up movies online, I decided to watch a few trailers to see which films were being released. After watching trailers for Yes Man and Bedtime Stories (I ended up seeing both over the holidays), I stumbled upon a trailer that caught me by surprise: Night at the Museum 2. At first I was excited, as I’ve been a huge Ben Stiller fan since Zoolander came out. But after watching the trailer I wondered, did the original Night at the Museum really need a sequel? The answer is no. A guy works at a museum and things come to life at night. Watching the trailer for the sequel was like déjà vu; I’ve already seen this movie.
