Artist Profile: Anthony Carone
January 29, 2009

by Mark Millard

You will rarely find anyone as committed to music as Anthony Carone. Ever since a young age, he knew that the music industry was for him. He recalls a time in high school when he really solidified the decision to pursue a career in music, although he says it was simply natural. “When I started taking stupid classes that I knew I was never going to use again, that’s when I knew I wasn’t going to do anything else but music,” Carone said. “I’ve practiced piano instead of doing math homework, or writing songs instead of English homework or whatever.” “It wasn’t really a decision that I made, it was kind of just what I did,” he added. Carone was exposed to music as early as the age of three. His father had several instruments including drums, keyboards, synthesizers, etc. He was intrigued by what he saw, and soon after began taking piano lessons.

Humber comedy grads win Tim Sims award
January 29, 2009

by Meagan Thibeault

Two Humber ITAL graduates who specialize in splitting sides and tickling funny bones achieved a monumental chuckle last month. Comedians, Laura Cilevitz and Josh Saltzman, won the 2008 Tim Sims Encouragement Award and brought home the $5000 cash prize bacon for their performance called 7 Minutes in Heaven. Cilevitz gave credit to Humber College’s Comedy & Writing Performance Program. “The teachers are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable,” Cilevtiz said. “They had a lot to do with helping me develop a strong work ethic – and that’s really important in the industry.” The graduates invented and developed a fictional couple they named ‘Greg and Danielle’. These characters eventually evolved into the sketch that won the pair their award.

Tony Lee returns to Humber for XXX hypnotist event
January 29, 2009

With the stress of returning to school after a long holiday break, the Humber Students’ Federation brought in XXX Hypnotist Tony Lee to CAPS Pub on Wednesday Jan. 14 to help students take a break and relax. Lee has been doing his XXX Hypnotist Show for 22 years, performing over 5000 shows during that span. Getting a chance to help relieve the stress of people’s everyday lives is what motivates Lee to continue performing. “You look at people today and they are stressed,” Lee said. “It doesn’t matter who you are, be it your age, gender, whatever; at my show you get a chance to have some laughs and relax.” Lee started the show by bringing five students on stage and making them fall under his command by putting them into a deep sleep. Over the next hour and a half, Lee entertained the packed crowd inside CAPS by making his subjects do wild things including dancing, putting their hands down their pants, and of coarse several things that just cannot be repeated through this article. Despite performing over 5000 shows, Lee says that each show he does is different from the last.

Day in the life: Aynur Duzgeren
January 29, 2009

by Carmen Brosseau

Having the responsibilities of a full time student and the Vice President of Campus Life, Aynur Duzgeren is a busy member of the Humber Students’ Federation. Although she was elected in May of 2008 to be the VP of Campus Life, Duzgeren has worked for HSF for the past three years. She started by holding the position of Events Assistant, and then became the Events Lead, which introduced her to the Vice President position. Currently a fourth year justice studies student at the University of Guelph-Humber, Duzgeren understands how it is to be a student and what is important to the student body. “Even though I’m VP of HSF, I do everything for the students and try to cater to all students’ needs. I don’t want anyone to feel afraid of coming up to me and sharing their ideas of an event; no matter how crazy it might be,” she said. Besides working in her office in KX 103C in the HSF student centre at North campus, Duzgeren organizes, plans, and creates all of the student events held on campus. Some of her favourites so far have been Big Brother, HSF Gala’s, and Frosh Week.

Day in the life: Shugufa Kaker
January 29, 2009

by Thomas Hurst

Every morning begins the same way for Shugufa Kaker, the Humber Student’s Federation’s Vice President of Campus Life at Lakeshore campus. The hardest part of the day occurs before even arriving at her office, racing her puppy, a six-month old teacup pomeranian named Moca, to the door. Once the morning struggles have ceased, it’s time to settle into her H building office and begin the tasks that make up the job she truly enjoys. “I love it. This is passionate work for me,” Kaker said. The shifts begin with a look through all the unread emails she has received. They include such topics as student inquiries, funding requests from clubs and administrative details. Once the emails have been taken care of, she is free to check any events that may be ongoing and assure that they are running smoothly. On slower days she will often MC the events. “I really enjoy being up in front of people and insisting they have fun,” Kaker said.
