Humber Hawks get the shutout in Sault Ste. Marie
January 29, 2009

by Mark Millard

The Humber Hawks continued their trend of convincing victories on the weekend, and can anyone be surprised? The women’s volleyball team, and the men’s and women’s basketball teams each showed off their impressive ability’s in a 56 player weekend trip to Sault Ste. Marie. The Hawks finished with an overall record of 4-0, showing that Humber ITAL has one of the top athletic programs in the country. The women’s basketball team got things started on Saturday Jan. 24, with a 57-45 victory over Algoma. The men continued the strong start to the weekend with a convincing win over Algoma, beating them 77-68. On Sunday Jan. 25, the women’s volleyball team joined in the action with a 3-0 win over Sault Ste. Marie and the men’s basketball team completed the shutout with their second victory of the weekend. They showed total domination with an 84-31 win over Sault. The men’s basketball team is currently on a ten game winning streak. Despite getting players back in the lineup, several others, including new players added at the break are stepping up their game. Athletic Director at Humber, Doug Fox says there is no doubt about what this team can do as contributions are coming from all players. “Our men knew they were going to win,” Fox said. “Our starters played six minutes. We were already well in the lead after six minutes so all our bench got to play and we have four people that joined us at Christmas, so they got a chance to play for the first time since joining the program.”

Not so "Super Bowl"
January 29, 2009

by Corey Johnson

With the season finale of the NFL season just days away, the 43rd annual NFL Super Bowl feels anything but “super” this year. Over the last few years we’ve seen some great Super Bowl Champions. The Dallas Cowboys of the mid-90s, the John Elway-led Denver Broncos of the late-90s, and who could forget the dynasty that has been the New England Patriots over the past seven years. This year’s matchup is between the Arizona Cardinals (who are making their first ever Super Bowl appearance) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (who are just three years removed from their first Super Bowl title in almost 30 years), which hardly compares to some of the star-studded Super Bowls of years past. Take last year for example. The Patriots hadn’t lost a game all season heading into the big game, while the New York Giants we being led by a man named Eli Manning, who was looking to finally get out of his brother Peyton’s shadow. The Giants played David in a classic David vs. Goliath matchup, coming from behind to prevent New England from completing their perfect season.

Athlete sets goal to help others
January 29, 2009

by Meagan Thibeault

Unlike most athletes, Julian Hartl isn’t striving for any trophies, medals, or “first place” titles. The second year Fitness and Health Promotion student’s main concern is wellness, but it wasn’t always that way. “Growing up I was not into fitness,” Hartl said. “I was living a very sedentary lifestyle, watching a lot of TV.” Just before enrolling at Humber ITAL he began improving his own fitness and realized how good it made him feel. “I thought it was really great and I decided that if I could help myself, maybe I could help others too,” Hartl said. By practicing fitness assessments on classmates, working out regularly, and studying physiology and anatomy, Hartl is fast-approaching his goal.

Hatton's "Here and There" a success
January 29, 2009

by Thomas Hurst

Michael Hatton may best be known for his position of Vice President at Humber College, but this past week he had the opportunity to show a different side of himself. On Jan. 14, the University of Guelph-Humber opened the doors of GH 128 to a gallery showcasing the photographs of Michael Hatton in an exhibit titled “Here and There”. The pieces came from around the world including such locations as China, Japan, Iceland and North America. The photographs ranged from landscape, to culture activities to the people themselves. “I was really intrigued by Green Shift,” first year business student, Taylor Mede said. “To capture that kind of motion in a still frame is catching to the eye and it also creates room for interpretation.” Green Shift showed what appeared to be a spider web being hit with water drops. The drops splash and spread through each little string.

If you’re interested in expanding your business skills and showing off your leadership abilities, then the Accounting Council might be what you’re looking for. You can meet new friends and be a part of a growing HSF club on campus, while improving your skills. The clubs’ mission and main goal is to promote accounting on campus for business students. Other students who feel they would positively contribute to any of the executive positions are welcomed to join in order to help expand on their personal skills. It was created four years ago by former business students and has grown to include 14 executive members. All the representatives range throughout each year of the program and help each other grow in the accounting industry. By being a part of the Accounting Council, business students in specific are able to shine in a new light. Not only by showing off their accounting skills but by applying what they learn in the classroom to a practical group setting. The clubs’ mission is to provide a place for students to apply what they learn in the classroom into an enriched environment and around other people. Fourth year business student, Agha Ahmed, has been the clubs president for two years in a row. He has high hopes for the clubs reputation and popularity.
