From McLiar to A-Fraud
February 11, 2009

by Corey Johnson
It was 1998 when I first really started to watch baseball. Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa were what baseball was all about, and I really enjoyed watching their epic chase of Roger Marris’ homerun record.
Watching McGuire hit number 70 is something I will never forget, and a record that I never thought could be broken. While Sammy Sosa fell short of McGuire’s 70, his 63 homeruns in 1998 still broke Marris’ record and impressed my 11-year-old self.

Cheerleading taken to new heights
February 11, 2009

by Carmen Brosseau
Many people attend sports games on campus, admiring athletes for their strength and talent in the game. But a sport you may not notice are the team of cheerleaders performing at half time and on the sidelines. Recently named a contact sport, cheerleading is more difficult than what you may assume.
Humber Athletics had its first cheerleading squad five years ago. It was brought to life by a former Humber student, Tara Grozier, and has grown in popularity since then. Julie Matthews, a fourth year Family and Community Social Services student at Guelph-Humber, is the teams’ captain.

The man behind the moustache
February 11, 2009

by Thomas Hurst
It’s been nearly 30 years in the making but Humber ITAL’s Athletic Director, Doug Fox, has turned Humber’s athletic program into one of the most successful programs across Canada.
Fox played five years of basketball at the University of Toronto and was therefore no longer eligible to compete. He was left with a choice of becoming a teacher or coming to Humber as a coach. Fox explains that he saw an excellent opportunity at Humber, as that was the year the Athletics Centre was being built, so he took a risk and accepted Humber’s offer. He is still happy with his decision.

Club Profile: Improv Club
February 11, 2009

by Meagan Thibeault
If you sometimes feel you’re stuck in the spotlight of the same old, never-ending life drama, why not try out some new characters?
Instead of playing the over-worked, under-slept college student, you could spend your time sipping translucent sparkling wine and counting invisible wads of cash as a retired CEO. If it’s nonsensical adventure you’re after, try playing the role of a bear wrangler who spends long, leisurely hours writing romantic prose.
