Two graduates from the Humber ITAL North campus recently won awards for their documentaries in the 2008 Cannes Student Filmmaking Program.
Graduate Katrina Bolletta and her teammates won the Best Documentary Award for their film, Le Dernier Endroit.
Graduate Richard Fung won a Distinguished Documentary Award as well as the Best Broadcast award for his team’s film, My Universe.
Fung and Bolletta were two of 45 students from around the world specially chosen to participate in the program created by Real Ideas Studio Inc.
Taking place during the Cannes Film Festival in May, the program invites accepted students to stay in Cannes for the duration of the festival.
“It was an amazing experience,” Bolletta, the editor of her groups film said. “To be able to work with team members from Mexico, Portugal and the United States opened my mind to new ideas and experiences.”
According to the Real Ideas Studio website, the goal of running the student program is to “focus on global networking and the evolution of a shared idea.”
Bolletta also said she owes a lot of her success to her time at Humber.
“I had a real leg up in Cannes due to my hands-on training at Humber, state-of-the-art equipment and top-notch working professionals who taught us there,” she said.
William Hanna, Dean, School of Media Studies and Information Technology at Humber North, says it is Humber’s ultimate goal to prepare its students for their future careers.
“We’re proud of our programs and students,” he said. “We’re giving them the skills so that they can perform at an international level.”
All of the documentaries produced by students in the program were related to their own experiences at the Cannes Film Festival and each focused on a different aspect of it.
While Fung’s film took a glimpse into the life of an aspiring Film Festival star, Bolletta’s film took viewers on a tour through Cannes with commentary by people who live there.
