NO FEELINGS SPARED

For the first time ever the extramural basketball team took on the varsity basketball team in a charity event to help raise money for cancer research.

The game took place on Mon. Apr. 7 in the gymnasium at Humber North and there was even a dunk competition that followed.

The game itself was intense. It was only a charity game but it seemed like the extramural boys had something to prove to their varsity adversaries.

As one would expect the varsity team took the game by almost 20 points but they didn’t do it easily. The varsity team had to fight for every point they got.

This is to say that the extramural team was not going down without a fight. The big differences between the teams definitely didn’t come from determination or drive.

The first big problem with the extramural team was their inability to hit the three pointers when they needed them. The games would begin to grow close and then varsity would throw down a couple threes and be back up by 15.

Chris Chang, head coach of the extramural team said he was proud of the way his team performed but the big thing that held them back was their toughness. He said they weren’t driving for the ball.

The intensity the varsity team was playing with limited the shots the extramural team could take. The shots they did take were often from bad angles or quick shots thrown at the net.

Chang was proud of the way his team never gave up throughout the entire game. Even though they were down the whole time they continued to play with determination.

Both Chang and the varsity team’s Head Coach, Darryl Glenn, said the whole point of the extramural team was to give the guys who didn’t make the varsity team a chance to play ball and work their way up to the varsity level.

The team was designed to be good practice for the varsity team although this is only the first time they have played each other. According to both coaches this will not be the last time they play.

There were definitely a few players on the extramural team that would fit right in with the varsity team. At the same time there were a few varsity players who would fit nicely in with the extramural team.

Maybe they belong on varsity and they just had a lazy game but there were a few trades I could see between the two squads.

Overall, I enjoyed myself. There was a lot of drive and determination from both sides. The varsity team was trying to prove that they were where they belonged and the extramural team was trying to prove that they weren’t where they belonged and deserved more.
